I met recently with Steven and Sarah White owners of Sareven Bakehouse ✅ originally named Fleming Cakes this bakery has been established in Thirroul for 43 years. They have owned the bakery for over 9 years.
Business name how did it come about? Our names Sarah & Steven together are: Sareven
Steven’s background? I started my apprenticeship as a Pastry Chef / Baker in 1993. I had worked in cake and pie shops wholesalers and also at Star City Casino when that opened in 1997 and then at The Bathers Pavilion in Balmoral.
Sarah's background? I became a Legal Secretary in 2002 working in Martin Place Sydney, for a mid-sized law firm in the Banking & Finance Department. That same year I met Steve. After working in the law firm for several years, I moved onto to be an Education Events Co-ordinator for a membership-based organisation for Company Directors working with experienced facilitators, venues and meeting a diverse range of people who came to the courses.
I was 7 months pregnant with our first child Elijah (9) when we took over the business, and we have since had two more children Dylan (6) and Hayley (2). I currently work behind the scenes of the business with wages, superannuation, bookkeeping etc, and keeping the family household running as smoothly as possible. A lot of our time and focus also goes into our middle child Dylan, who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder two and a half years ago.
What inspired you to take over this business? We always wanted to run our own business, it was the only part of my trade I had never attempted. When we saw Flemings Cakes for sale, it became the perfect opportunity for us and me to achieve my dream.
Best describe your business; A bakehouse where everything is made and baked on site.
Summary of products sold; Award winning pies, gourmet, traditional also vegan. Bread, sourdough, cakes, pastries, desserts, coffee and birthday cakes.
Do you live locally to your business? We actually bought a house 5 minutes walk up the hill on Arunta Drive in 2015.
Would you like to add anything else? We support, sponsor and/or supply to many local sporting clubs, such as Thirroul Butchers Senior and Junior Rugby League, Woonona Bushrangers, Northern Districts Tigers, Coledale Waves Soccer Club, Coledale Bulldogs.
We also donate leftovers daily to OzHarvest, Thirroul Community Centre and Hope Kitchen in Port Kembla. We are very proud of our deep ties within the community of Thirroul and other neighbouring suburbs. We will always continue to support those who have always supported us.
